The Nanking Massacre, also known as the Rape of Nanking, was a period of mass murder and atrocities committed by the Imperial Japanese Army against the residents of Nanking, China, during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The massacre took place over a six-week period starting in December 1937, during which an estimated 300,000 Chinese civilians and disarmed soldiers were killed, and widespread looting and sexual violence occurred. The event is considered one of the worst atrocities of World War II and has had a lasting impact on Sino-Japanese relations. **

Nanking was renamed to Nanjing in order to use the modern pinyin romanization system for Chinese characters. The change was part of a larger effort to standardize the romanization of Chinese place names and make them more consistent with the pronunciation of the Chinese language. The new name, Nanjing, reflects the way the city's name is pronounced in Mandarin Chinese, and it is now the internationally recognized spelling for the city. **

The Japanese frenzy of bloodlust during the invasion of Nanking can be attributed to a combination of factors. Firstly, the intense nationalism and militarism that characterized Japanese society at the time fueled a sense of superiority and a belief in the righteousness of their actions. Additionally, the dehumanization of the Chinese people through propaganda and the perception of them as inferior further fueled the brutality of the Japanese soldiers. Furthermore, the lack of accountability and the encouragement of violence by their superiors created an environment where atrocities were not only condoned but also rewarded. These factors combined to create a frenzy of bloodlust that led to the horrific events in Nanking. **
